In the papers today 04-08-2006

News has surfaced this weekend that Gill was offered Mascherano on a loan type deal, but was never interested in Tevez. This was a footballing decision taken by Ferguson, but was it the right one?

I have been reading a few articles on the Mascherano situation. The news is that MSI had a string of demands relating to the 2 Argentinean youngsters. One such demand was that the players must be selected for every game. Can you honestly see Ferguson agreeing to that one? Neither do I. The second demand was that the player could be sold at any time according to MSI’s stipulations. Again I can see how this could harm the club, if you become reliant on a player and then all of a sudden Real Madrid decide they want him, all of a sudden you are stuck with a huge void to fill, possibly when the transfer window is shut.

I think Ferguson has a very clear picture of who he wants to fill that midfield position. For those of you who don’t know who that is I’ll give you a clue. He is Anglo Canadian and plays his football in Germany. Yes Hargreaves demonstrated yet again that he is an excellent holding midfielder. He harried the opposition all day long on Saturday, agreeably against very poor opposition. His free-kick was a masterclass and he was desperately unlucky with his long range effort. One thing is for sure. Fergie will not have given up on Hargreaves just yet, especially as the player so desperately wants a move to England. Expect more movement in the transfer market at Christmas.

So was Fergie right in turning down a loan type offer for Mascherano? On reflection I think so. MSI’s involvement is questionable, for me they are a shady organisation that will bring more trouble than the players are worth. If we were to sign either player, it should be to the tune that MSI relinquish all ownership and rights to them. Anything less would be damaging to morale.

On the international scene it was really refreshing to see Wes Brown starting for England. The guy has overcome so many injuries and the doubters have been in line to ridicule the guy on a number of occasions. He has been instrumental at the back for United last season and this one. It is refreshing to see Steve rewarding this kind of fine form.

I thought David Gill's comments on 5Live were interesting yesterday when he said they turned down Mascherano for 'footballing reasons'. If you were Owen Hargreaves and you were listening to that then surely you'd feel pretty wanted.

I thought OH had a great game against Andorra and probably worth waiting for.

Yeah I think Gill handled himself very well in that interview, made the presenter look like a bit of a fool for asking the questions that he did. Ferguson obviously knows who he wants and Mascherano wasn't it!
Time killing have you joined the fantasy football league yet? If you have, what team are you?

It looks like Ferguson wants Hargreaves and only Hargreaves so it will be interesting to see how much it eventually costs to get him from Bayern (whether its January or next summer). We've spent nothing this summer so in theory there should be be a huge transfer kitty available. I think we may have to go over the £20 million mark to get him though and possible up to £25 million. When you see his performances for England in the DM role you totally understand why Fergie wants him, there would be no queston marks as to whether of not he will fit in, it would be the best money we could possible spend.

i think Gill went public about rejecting Mascherano because it would strengthen Hargreaves's desire to move here.
Also Hargreaves did play well on saturday yes....but remind me again...who was the opposition?

I think Gill went public because of the flack that was coming from supporters as to why we weren't trying to get either Tevez or Mascherano. It does indirectly strengthen how the club views Hargreaves but also it stops any attention being brought to bear on the clubs finances and the Glaziers.

yeah, it was only Andorra but for my money Hargreaves outshone all the other England players on Saturday. Lennon had a nice cameo role towards the end but it was basically a training session. It will be interesting to see how much harder, if any, the Macedonia match will be.

Last point on the England match, hopefully Lampard will now transfer his England performances into something similar for Chelsea. Is it me or does he look burnt out?

I would like to have had a decent team in our qualifying group like Germany or Italy. We will literally be going through the motions to qualify! Hargreaves was again the best man on the park. Lennon looked good as well, although it'd not that hard to skin a bunch of part tiers for 20 minutes!
