Manchester United transfer news 5th January

The signing of Bayern Munich’s Owen Hargreaves seems more likely this morning as they soften their stance on United signing the illustrious midfielder. This represents great news for the reds and takes us one step closer to Fergie creating another dynasty at Old Trafford.

It seems ever more likely that Hargreaves will join in January subject to the clubs agreeing a fee believed to be somewhere in the region of £15 million. But strengthening should not stop there, another winger is required to provide adequate cover for Ronaldo, Giggs and Park this season.

Some sections of the media suggested that United have an extra £20 million available for a big name signing, whether or not this is true is largely irrelevant, what is important is that cash is available for strengthening should it be required. I am sure Ferguson has his eyes on signing a striker in the summer, perhaps in the form of Torres or Huntelaar, but meanwhile our priority should be a tenacious midfielder and winger.

It seems that Mascherano is a target for Liverpool. After his failure to settle at West Ham, many people on the blog and forum have expressed their relief that we did not sign the Argentinean wonderkid. However it is my opinion that Mascherano is still a great player and would represent a fantastic coup should our biggest rivals land him. Who would you prefer, Hargreaves or Mascherano?

Gareth Bale has rejected a new contract with Southampton alerting Manchester United, the question is… how many left-backs do we need? With Evra and Heinze in the squad I can’t see the teenager getting too many games. Perhaps we should be concentrating on the other side of the field, with only Neville and Brown filling that position?

The Mirror also reports that we will try and sign Bentley from Blackburn should we fail to land star man Hargreaves. Personally I can’t see this one happening, If we don’t land Hargreaves I don’t think we will sign anyone else. Anyhow that rounds up the transfer news for today. I look forward to hearing your comments!

It would be crazy to pay 20 million pounds for Hargreaves. There is absolutely no common sense in it. I am totally against it. But Fergie doesn't care because he is not using his money to buy the player. First, Hargreaves doesn't work 20 million. If Hargreaves worths 20 million, then Bayern should have paid 60 million for Podolski, but they only paid him for less than 7 million pounds. Why Bayern can buy players of qualities like Podolski and Ballack (some years ago from Leverkusen) at a deflated price? While someone interested in their players have to pay an inflated prices?! It is because that leads to my second point that, they are obviously holding us for ransom. I think we should look for someone else. The transfer windows has only just begun and we still have plenty of time to look around. Forget Hargreaves!

I definitely think Hargreaves is the man we need right now, and it's fantastic it seems he's finally going to sign for United.

It wasn't so long ago that SAF was talking about signing players who wanted to play for United, and there's no doubt about Hargreaves' desire to play for MUFC. I don't think we'd get the same kind of committment out of Ballack that we'll get from Hargreaves, plus at 25 he's a long-term signing, unlike Mr £130,000 a week.

We'll probably have to pay over the odds for OH, especially if you consider that Mascherano may end up at Anfield for £5 million, but he clearly fills a position at Old Trafford that no-one else can right now.

The Bale transfer would be an odd one, unless we're trying to do for left backs what Chelsea do for midfield players! However, I think Silvestre's performances in the two games over Christmas were another reminder that he's not the most reliable defender to have in the squad...

According to the Mirror, Vidic is supposed to be injured (hamstring) for a couple of weeks, although hopefully that'll be as accurate as their story on Bentley!

Rather belated this, but Happy New Year, Agent! Good to have the blog back again on a regular basis.

I think Hargreaves would suit our centre better than Mascherano would initially, however in terms of financial impact, you'd opt for Mascherano. If he is allowed to leave for £5m and takes a short time to adjust to life at OT, compared to £20m from Hargreaves who could make an immediate impact its a tough call.

If money were no object, it'd be Hargreaves all day long. Lets hope we can get him for considerably less than £20m!

Also, let us bear in mind that Mascherano can't play for Liverpool until after June 1st due to the FIFA two club rule. The same would apply if he were to come to OT in this transfer window. That being said, Hargreaves would be perfect. Carrick, Giggs, Scholes, Hargreaves, Park, Fletcher and of course Christiano Ronaldo across our midfield will add immediate depth and strength. £15m for Hargreaves is fair. Anymore than that needs serious consideration.

If we have paid £18 million for Carrick then Hargreaves is worth at least as much and probably more. Bayern know this and will hold out for as much as possible. Personally I say fuck the cost and get him in even at £25 million! I know it's over priced but it's so obvious he's the one we need.
