Why is it so difficult for MAnchester United to sign anyone?

Why is it that Manchester United has so much trouble signing new players? The news today is that Gareth Bale would prefer a move to Tottenham over United. Surely this can’t be true. No disrespect to Tottenham but who are you more likely to win trophies with? Who has the better calibre of players? For me United win hands down!

Then there is the Hargreaves saga. I feel like this one has been dragging on for years. The figures being quoted now are between £20 and £23 million, I feel that we are in real danger of overpaying for a player that, although good is not 100% fit and has only recently made a name for himself. I’m sure Bayern will reject the offer yet again and the whole thing will continue in the summer.

In other news it seems that Ronaldo is on the verge of signing a new deal with the reds. His new contract will put him on in excess of £100,000 per week, not bad work if you can get it, has anyone ever thought about a career change? In all seriousness, I feel that this is a shrewd move by Ferguson, Ronaldo will only improve and dramatically in my opinion, it would be great for him to commit his future to United letting him concentrate on his football.

I know twinkle toes has been playing fantastic football, but I would like to praise the 21 year olds’ professionalism over what has been a turbulent year. As we have seen so many times before at United his has risen from adversity to become the hero. The Portuguese superstar has answered all those critics after the world cup by playing beautiful football, developing his game at every opportunity. He gets booed at every away game he goes to and he responds simply by playing football. Ronaldo we thing you’re the greatest, so please sign that deal!

We have the FA cup against Portsmouth at the weekend, we have most players fit and so we now have options when selecting the team. For me I would play Heinze and Park, resting, Evra and Giggs. I also think Saha should get a run out over Larrson. Keep these boys back for the Premiership and surely we can win the next 2 games. What does everyone think?

From what I've read Sir Alex will make his move for Bale (if he thinks he's good enough!) after the Man City v Southampton Cup match on Sunday when he can see the lad play.

The Bayern Munich Board are supposed to be meeting today to discuss Hargreaves so maybe we will hear something on Friday. One way or the other.

If its no then obviously we'll have to wait until the summer but my view would be if it isn't sorted very earlier in the summer then fuck it and go for someone else.

Normally (even pre Glaziers) we would only buy one or two players in the summer so as not to unbalance the team with too many new faces however we probably need 3-4 new players this year and I don't see us buying in that many in the summer period. I think we need a forward, midfielder and a winger. Any suggestions?

I've been wondering the same thing. Why is it always a battle for us to sign someone? I think every deal should be done like the loan for Larsson, quick and not in the public eye. I guess every united fan is sick of the "Hargreaves saga". We'll pay a huge amount for the player, I believe he'll be a success at old trafford but we cannot say he's a world class midfielder at the moment. We should look at other players, Gattuso is a great option, and not be held to ransom by Bayern. If a deal can be done for a fair price great, but I'm sure united can sign any good midfielder for less than £23 million.
Staying on topic, the portuguese media as been reporting a huge interest from Real Madrid (and also Barcelona) in signing Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer. Today the headlines were "Real will do anything to sign Ronaldo" and "Ronaldo is top priority for Real", I really hope he signs a new contract and stays at united. it would be devastating to see such talent leave the club.
I've read on this blog a lot about a possible move for Nani (the Sporting Lisbon winger) but he would not be my first choice. There's a fantastic winger in FC Porto, Ricardo Quaresma. It's reported Atletico Madrid will sign him for the next season, I really think we should sign him. It would be amazing to see Cristiano Ronaldo on the left and Quaresma on the right, that's the future of the portuguese national team. Unfortunately Giggs will not play forever and we should look for a good replacement. Let's not do the same thing we did with replacing Roy Keane.

I know this is slightly off topic but After watching Arsenal reserves tear apart Spurs in the second half of the match yesterday I thought to myself, where are uniteds up- and coming youngsters.

Arsenal have Traore, Denilson, Walcott, Hoyte and countless other African players which all seem strong, skillful and ready for the first team which they seem to pull out of some magical hat. Uniteds scouting network should be the best in the world but where are our talented yougsters?. The ones we seem to have just arnt good enough. our reserves struggled to beat Crewe and lost to southend but arsenals reserves got a draw and argulaby should have won against a full stengh Tottenham team.

Its time Fergie started thinking about the future and signed some decent youngsters and improve our scouting system

It seems from what I've been reading that the issue with the Hargreaves transfer going through in January is not so much the total but how much is paid up front and how much is tied to installments. Hargreaves is only going to play the last couple of months of the season, so if Bayern could secure a bigger share of the fee up front now that they may be able to get in negotiations over the summer then in one sense it might be a good deal for them.

Assuming the transfer ever goes through we'll probably pay too much for him but, with the title race likely to be incredibly close, would it be a false economy to save a couple of million now when his contribution could prove vital in the run-in?

Great goal by Rossi, btw.

More importantly, why are we letting Heinze run his contract down? Former player of the year, brilliant, committed and once again fit. Can we really afford to lose such talent, even with the surprising emergence of Evra?

Quaresma - he has been a favourite of Fergie for years and I would think that he and Quieroz would be monitoring this situation.

When considering whether to cash in on Rondaldo, while £35m may sound like a lot we took a bit of a gamble and paid £12m for him. £23m these days buys you Owen Hargreaves! However, if Real are prepared to offer £50m, sell him.

Finally, Saha must be a bit peeved at the moment - he has not started in ages.

i've been out of the loop for a while so haven't been keeping up with transfer news, but i'm pretty disappointed that we've reached the deadline and it doesn't look like we're going to bring in anyone new. not that the team is that weak, but the first team is going to get tired by april.

so, agent, you're right to complain: why is it so hard for us to sign new players? i wish i had the answer. i think there is definitely the fact that anyone selling to man utd is going to jack up the price, meaning the players we do want will go to chelsea/milan/barcelona first rather than to us.

i do agree with the person who compared our youth program to arsenal's. we did it once, we need to build it up again, at least to the point where the kids can come in and take the pressure off the older players now and then. that doesn't seem to be happening.

i remember a post from earlier in the season about our youth players and what their prospects were....maybe you should send that to the utd board!

finally, i think we can and will win the next couple of games. and i'm really excited for the champs league to start up again.
