Roma V MAnchester United Match review.

Last night was a heated affair and this morning our thoughts should be with those innocent fans that were brutally attacked by Italian riot police. Yes there were some Manchester United fans who stupidly reacted to provocation from the Roma crowd, but repeatedly beating women, children and old men cannot be tolerated. There were images of broadcast across the world of police acting in a barbaric fashion, beating fans that were lying unconscious on the floor. At one point senior officer were holding back other officers to stop their thirst for Mancunian blood. The authorities in Europe could learn a lot from UK police on how to deal with the crowds. Every time I go to Old Trafford there is little police presence within the ground and very rarely any trouble. In my opinion riot police promote a hostile environment.

Ok rant over for now, so what about the game. First off, and I don’t often say this, Paul Scholes was stupid. He was flying in all over the shop with rash tackles and deserved to be sent off. It was his actions that landed us with a defeat in my opinion. The rest of the team were magnificent. Ronaldo was sublime, ran the show and provided us with an outlet to attack.

Rooney’s goal was superb. For a player struggling to find his best form, his composure and touch to give us real hope was incredible. I was saying last night, 2-1 is better than 1-0. I think we will be fine at Old Trafford. We always create and nearly always score.

We certainly missed Vidic last night. I am sure with him and Rio at the back we wouldn’t have conceded 2 goals, but that is the game of football. We take the highs with the lows. So there is no need to worry, the red army goes marching on, a little battered and a couple of soldier down, but I have no doubt we can march over the finishing line!

I agree that the game was lost by Scholes, whose tackles were very dangerous for Roma's players.I'm not so sure that things would have gone better with Vidic,Roma being an ultra-technique team.In my opinion,we must concentrate on our qualities,as about technique-Ronaldo is the only who can face them.

absolutely. thoughts with those poor fans who got caught up in the mayhem. i'm surprised they sell glass bottles at the stadium and even more surprised that the italian authorities don't consider that to be a security risk and make them play behind closed doors (though i'm glad for us that they didn't - the players much prefer having a crowd there, even a hostile one).

anyway, the match itself was equally wonderful and frustrating. scholes was frankly idiotic. SAF will have had real go at him i'm sure and i'm sure he is man enough to own it. and yes, ronaldo was sublime. just ran right through the roma defence on a number of occasions. but unfortunately the rest of the attacking line up (apart from the goal) wasn't really playing up to his speed. giggs was definitely off the pace and saha looked like a bull in a china shop when he came on. i wonder why we didn't play smithy who is match fit and could have chased the ball down the other end?

o'shea looked really uncomfortable to be filling gary's shoes!! poor bloke looked like a pretzel every time mancini ran round him. let's hope he has more composure next week. heinze was great as usual and i thought wes did a decent job alongside rio, actually looking quite composed on the ball, though maybe a little less 'firm' in the air than vidic!

it's going to be a toss up next week that's for sure. roma will look at the scoreline and our injuries and hope they can counterattack. we have to be very very strong and just overwhelm them. saha will be back in front i'm sure, and i can see giggs being back to his best. fletcher will have to fill in for scholes - a gaping hole which reminds us why we want hargreaves. we will all be biting our nails that's for sure.

btw, we should give respect to some nice moves from roma - totti has a sweet back heel! he'd fit in nicely at old trafford!!!

right! bring on portsmouth...let's make up for an unsatisfying week and maybe bring some joy to those poor injured fans.

Kudos to SAF & CQueiroz with the tactical acumen agst Roma.

As SAF had wish for, the away goal scored with 10 players was crucial for the return leg. The ref is questionable with few decisions on the pitch, but not both bookable offence by Scholes. Yep, we miss him on the 2nd leg but the team had shown the consistency and resilience when Scholes was suspended for 3 matches earlier.

As long as we have Scholes in the league matches, the team will sail through with the premiership.

Game on for the 2nd leg at OT next Tuesday (early Wed morn in Malaysia)
