Man Utd Transfer Rumours 10/05/2007

What a drab game last night, but then we all expected that didn’t we. Chris Eagles looked lively and I for one hope that he breaks into the first team next season. I think the game only warrants 3 lines of today’s post so let’s move onto transfer targets!

The Independent carries on with the story that United are still very much interested in signing Eto. I have been thinking about this for the past day or so and I am in 2 minds. Yes he is a superb player, but does he have the right attitude to be at United? Would he and Ferguson clash? If they did we all know that there would only be one winner!

The Eto saga is complicated further in the fact that he recently sacked his lawyer and agent, meaning he now conducts negotiations himself. His erratic and volatile behaviour could be a hindrance upsetting the harmony of the club. If there is one man who could handle him though, it would be Ferguson!

But let’s look at the guys pace and skill. There is no doubt that he would score an abundance of goals, such is hi speed and agility. He would suit a real “footballing club” like Manchester United, where speed and slick passing are key! But £40 million? I don’t think so, especially considering he only has 2 years left on his current deal and no new one on the horizon.

The BBC talks of Freddy Shepherd’s anger at news that Owen could trigger a clause in his contract and leave for £9 million. To me that sounds like a chairman that is nervous, worried about losing one of his star assets. I think getting Owen for a knock down £9 million would be a shrewd bit of business, should Fergie pull it off. Sorry Freddie!

Owen is another player who thrives on pace. He has had 2 horrific injuries, but hopefull he can put that behind him now. It would be great to see Rooney and Owen link up week in week out, and perhaps it would help England’s chances too!

Not much else to report today, but as ever, keep posting if you hear any more news!

My prediction is that we are after two midfielders and one striker, namely Nani, Hargreaves and Torres.

As the Portuguese chap mentioned yesterday, there's a flood of Portuguese talent and with Ronaldo and Quieroz we are probably better equipped even than Chelsea (Jose) to tap into it, finances aside of course.

Hargreaves will be seen by fergie as an auxilliary right back, a role he has fulfilled for England. We have 8 able defenders, all apart from Ferdinand and Vidic capable of filling in other positions. I can't see him breaking the bank for Bale as Spurs will set the bidding very high as they will break the bank for him as they've been without a left sided player all season (either in defence or midfield). Whether they would sell Berbatov to raise money for Bale ...
I suppose Micah Richards has been rumoured and would be a typical fergie siging...

I do think Ribery is superb though and would have no problems in the PL - he had more dynamism than most other players at the WC. I would have expected to see him join Arsene's French Foreign Legion but with Wenger's own future in doubt, that is less likely now.

I mentioned Dyer yesterday as (1) he is lightning quick (when fit!),(2) apparently has no future when Big Sam rides into Toon, (3) is likely to be cheap and (4) fergie has always wanted him and fergie usually gets his man, eventually (eg ruud, van der saar, larsson, blanc and hopefully hargreaves).

That brings me on to Torres - fergie wanted him last year and won't have changed his mind.

Another player he's always been linked to is defoe - a poorer man's owen. I can't see fergie going for owen - he doesnt match fergie's usual photofit of a player on the up - he is very one dimensional and cannot shift about like our forward players have been doing this year. also, if dyer is injury prone, then owen...
Defoe would be a useful addition and his price, as with dyer and torres, will be lower than previous times we've been interested.

I am surprised there was no one else in for Woodgate - he would have been a superb addition for us despite my comments above - you can always find room in your squad for someone as good as him. Maybe persistent injury worries put fergie off. (Note the difference between a one-off serious injury - Ruud and Hargreaves, and persistent injuries - Dyer, Woodgate, Owen. Maybe fergie would steer clear of the latter 3).

Hi Agent

Anything over 25 million for Eto and we should look elsewhere. We'll probably be paying 20 million for Hargreaves, so if there is a 50 million tranfer kitty that would leave 30 million and we also want Nani (probably 10 million - I don't know?) so we would be left with approximately 20 million to fund a striker maybe at a push 25 if we could get Eto for that.

I think Owen would be a good buy at 9 million but I also believe that Gudjohnson (at Barcelona) would be even better - proven track record in the Premiership and he would cost a fraction of Eto probably 3-4 million and I'm sure he would welcome regular first team football. I'd go for both Owen and Gudjohnson. Although neither are particularly big physically. Those two would be bargain buys.

I would really love to see us get Tevez and play him along side Rooney - now that would scare the crap out of any defence. They could play as the front two in a 4-4-2 formation or even interchange as the lone frontman with the other on the left side in a 4-5-1 formation.

I must admit I love this part of the year when we can start to dream about who we want for next season, it's even better this time having just got the premiership back!!

P.S. Watched the match last night and I thought Dong was really cumbersome - like a very bad version of Ruud and without the quality.

I think Owen has been really unlucky with injuries. For Dyer he always seems to be out with niggles! Anyhow you are right neither are on the up, and as a result don't marry up to Fergies usual purchases. If it was between Torres and Eto I'd go Eto every time. I think Torres still has a lot to prove, but hey what do I know.

At the end of the transfer deadline last summer, lets face it - we were shitting our pants at the thought of over paying for Carrick and not bringing in a replacement for Ruud. With this in mind, i'd be very happy if the squad didnt change a great deal. If Nani came in from Lisbon and Hargreaves from Bayern - frankly i'd be content. Too many changes are never that productive...but if we see Saha leave, i'd be over the moon to sign Tevez. That would give us even more attacking threat - i'd only loan out one of Pique and Jones. Defensively i'm happy with Heinze covering rio and vidic...evra and Heinze covering left back...with Silvestre covering both cb and lb...pique, neville and brown (who can cover cb to) for the rb spot.

Peace...maybe bring in someone in January if we get a serious injury...
