With news emanating from the Newspapers that United have placed a down payment for Fernando Torres, do United fans think this is a good thing? Can we accommodate him into our system and more importantly will he settle?
Okay before I go any further with this article, I know that it is the Star reporting this, so I am not going to get too excited as yet. But it does raise the more fundamental question of who are we going to get to replace Ruud Van Nistelrooy. Saha has been amazing so far this season, but were he to get injured, we would be left with Alan Smith and Solskjaer. Whilst bith are great players, Ole is 33 and Alan is recovering from a broken leg, an injury that can take over a year to completely recover from.
We should have a lot of money to spend over the next year. As far as I am aware we are now net gainers in the transfer market and so some much needed investment is required. I will be happy for another midfielder to come in as well as a striker. Torres would be great for our striking option, whilst Hargreaves would be ideal for the centre of our midfield.
The Hargreaves issue is a contentious one. If we were to buy him in January I think he would be unavailable for Champions league games, which would reduce his value to us. I think it would make more sense to bring him here in the summer, when he has recovered more fully from his broken leg and will be eligible to play in all competitions for us, but hey what do I know?
If that were to be the case then we need a midfielder this Christmas. I would recommend an experienced player that can really do the business. I’m not sure who, but that’s why I have you guys to make suggestions. Answers on a postcard please.

I agree about getting a new midfielder in January.
My suggestion would be Nigel Reo-Coker, now I know he isn't an 'experienced' midfielder as such but with the unrest at West Ham and the rumours that were circulating towards the end of August about Nigel leaving, I think he would be a solid acquistion for United. If we do get Hargreaves in the summer we would then have three of the most exciting English centre midfielders at our disposal (Reo Coker, Hargreaves and Carrick).
As for a striker, I think the most important quality is to find someone who can play in the system we currently operate, i.e. a pacy centre forward in the Saha-role, to help exploit our best quailty of fast paced coutner attacking football. How good is Torres at performing such a role?
I think Torres main attributes are his strength and speed. He would work well at United and give us some cover. He could also make the move in January as he would not be cup tied for champions league football.
Just why he stays at Athletico is beyond me. It can't be doing his career much good as he is clearly capable of competing at the highest level.
I am not sure about torres. i dont think he is an out and out striker. He is not the most consistent performer. As far as the DM is concerned, we should go for someone who plays in the premier league and someone who could immediately adjust to our style of play. Just hope we get someone who could play well in the premier league as well as the Champions league
Torres is a mixture of Rooney, Ruud and Ronaldo. he has fantastic pace, amazing strength for a spanish international (no disrespect intended!) and has the poacher quality that Ruud made his name by. apparently his release clause is about £27m, and considering he is 22 and has about 10 years of top level gaming in his system, i dont think it would be a bad idea getting him.
however i also have great respect for Huntlaar, the new, young, dutch prodigy, touted as Ruud reincarnated (even though he isnt dead).
as for midfield, Hargreaves should be our #1 target, even though he has a broken leg. we should bid as high as 17m as once thought however, because things can go wrong after injury. Reo-Coker would be a great signing too, but it's Hargreaves all the way for me
its me who posted at 3.38, i meant to say we shouldnt bid as high as 17m for Hargreaves as once thought, because he is injured and things can go wrong after injuries.
Strikers: two suggestions.
1.Fernando Torres: it's been said before. Pace, talent, goals, youth, you name it. Something that keeps me optimistic is the constant press stories linking him to United. He could play in the CL.
2.Adriano: also has pace, goals, talent, youth. Adriano has CL experience, which is a plus, and has enough strength to battle any premiership defender. So he should also be considered, especially with the striker situation at Inter, he is one of 5! However, he would be cup-tied for the CL.
Midfield: Senna and Villarreal won't even consider doing business with United after last summer.
Hargreaves is the universal choice, I guess. His desire to come to United is a plus. And his performances (not just recently) put him in an elite class of young midfielders. He would be cup-tied, but I see no reason why we should wait until the summer. He would always be rested for PL matches, and, at least, Bayern would not have him in their ranks for the competition. Another thing is, he could use the second half of this season tu get used to the PL, and will quite probably adapt quickly. Evra and Vidic are examples of how coming in January can help you adapt.
It's difficult to even name other midfielders, given how close Hargreaves was to coming to United. If we are looking for someone with PL experience, who is not CL tied, I'll go out on a limb and say Papa Bouba Diop. He's pretty strong, fearless, and has a great shot. I've not been able to see Scott Parker too much, but he seems pretty well regarded.
So there are many midfield options, I guess budget and other concerns will dictate who will come in Jan.
two words... Scott Parker.
i heard kaka is a target for fergie and he is very versatile- play in wing or up front with rooney. but torres and rooney sounds amazing!!
eto'o is good friends with ferdinand and vidic...
