Wigan V Man Utd Match Report

What a fantastic performance from the boys this afternoon. We went down early to a screamer of a free kick but we had the fight and took the game to Wigan. It was a much needed win and maintains the pressure on the other teams who know they must keep winning to keep up with the mighty reds.

When Leighton Baines scored that screacher within the first 10 minutes I was sat there thinking to myself “it’s going to be one of those days”. My feelings were confirmed when throughout the first half we pressed and pressed, yet our hard work was not rewarded with a goal. Rooney showed a flash of brilliance on the half hour mark with a fantastic turn and shot. Unfortunately for him and us, his shot ricocheted off the cross bar and we were left holding our heads wondering if it was just not our day.

We came out after the break with a real determination to get something from the game. The introduction of Giggs seemed to change the dynamics of the team. We had the bit between our teeth and Rooney particularly looked determined to grab the points for United.

Rooney was very much the focal point of the second half. He looked comfortable on the ball, his confidence growing with every touch he had. We began to see the Rooney we all know and love, sitting behind Saha, playing those intricate through balls that every striker takes delight in receiving. Rooney’s never say die attitude seemed to galvanise the team and it wasn’t long before we were rewarded. A Vidic header made it 1-1, but United didn’t seem like stopping there.

United continued with relentless pressure. Rooney continuing to be at the centre of every move. His cross led to Saha’s 20th goal in 25 games, the Frenchman taking one touch and acutely banging the ball into the back of the net.

Solskjaer who had played phenomenally was to grab his 5th goal in 8 games to make it 3-1. Again Rooney was creator, his excellent touch gifted solskjaer a brilliant opportunity.

Man of the match for me was Rooney. It was great to see him enjoying his football again. The one to watch was most definitely Solskjaer, he tormented Wigan all afternoon on that right wing and it’s great to have him back after such a torrid time with injury. Liverpool drew meaning we are 8 points clear of them. If we beat them next weekend it would be fantastic. Premiership here we come.
