Man Utd 5 V 1 Fulham.. We are back and we are hungry!

Well guys what a weekend it has been for Man Utd. First off can I just say I’ve missed your comments this weekend. I feel like we’ve got a great little community going here and with the new season starting like it did, I hope we go from strength to strength. Having moved to the sunny climbs of Cheltenham for work purposes, it’s a long trip over to the theatre of dreams, but one that needs to be done nonetheless. I left at 9am and subsequently bombed it down the M6 ensuring I arrived in plenty of time for kick off.

And boy was it good to be back. I always realise how much I have missed United on the first game of the season. The fans were outstanding, in full song. I have a really sore throat now from all the singing, but you have to go for it don’t you? Anyway onto the game, I’m unsure of the best way to do a match analysis so if you have any suggestions of how you would like them to go, please let me know, after all this blog is as much yours as it is mine.

As I’m sure you are all aware, most of the action came in the first 19 minutes. Luis Saha opened the account within 6 minutes, using his head to great account. 8 minutes later Saha’s cross came off Ian Pierce and into the net resulting in an own goal. No later than 1 minute on, Rooney slotted his first goal home of the afternoon with a simple tap in, before turning provider for the inspirational Ronaldo, making it four in 19 minutes. I think Chris Coleman put it perfectly “The wheels just came off, and when you play against quality like Manchester United, they will punish you”. And punish them we did. We played with a confidence and a hunger that was evident towards the tail end of last season. We used the width to great affect. The full backs were constantly overlapping, creating space all over the field.

Rio slotted home just before have time, unfortunately it was into his own goal as a deflected shot confused Van Der Sar making it 4-1. After the break United evidently wanted more and a wonderful move between Rooney, Brown and Ronaldo resulted in a fine goal on 63 minutes.

The highlights of the performance were the slick pass and move game that united played. Ryan Giggs at 32 was awesome, the Welshman often interchanging with Ronaldo, confusing a lacklustre Fulham team. United were finding space in abundance, as much created by their neat play as from a shoddy Fulham performance. Paul Scholes showed why he is still classed as one of the best midfielders in the premiership. He sat just behind Rooney, Saha, Giggs and Ronaldo and seemed to always be there to pick up the pieces if an attack broke down. He would pick the ball up and create a new attacking move almost instantly. O’Shea looked solid, although he will need to improve his game against some of the bigger teams if he is to keep his place.

Rooney and Ronaldo showed why they are the brightest stars for their respective countries with one of the most dazzling displays I have ever seen. They have an understanding of each others game that is frightening. Countless times they played each other into acres of space and seemed to take it in turns to set each other up for goal scoring opportunities. The pair were clearly enjoying themselves and this was typified when towards the end of the game Rooney put Ronaldo through for a 1 on 1, only for Ronaldo to skew his shot wide, Rooney’s reaction? A big fat grin!

Something United have been criticized for in recent years is retaining possession. Yesterday United cannot have been found guilty for such a crime. Well timed tackles from all players coupled with quick closing down meant the Fulham players were given no time to react on the ball. United turned attack into defence in an instant, ask any premiership team if they would like to face Ronaldo, Rooney, Saha and Giggs in an attack and I think you will get a resounding “NO”.

One man to mention is Patrice Evra. He has received a bit of stick from United fans during his 6 months with us and in the first 20 minutes you could understand why. His game seemed to lack a certain confidence. There were a couple of mistimed tackles and when he attempted a long ball up field and it went wrong, he seemed to go into his shell and simply pass to feet. Well returning to the simple stuff was definitely worth it, because as the game went on Evra simply got better and better. In the second half he was outstanding. He played with confidence and made some truly outstanding well timed challenges. He showed exactly what he is capable of and I just want to say well done to him.

United could not have wished for a better start to the premiership. Yesterday we sent out a message to Chelsea and the others. We are hungry and we want to win in style. I said before the start of the season that this will be our year and yesterdays performance helped to reinforce my belief.

We must now contend with 3 games without Rooney and Scholes, question is who are we going to play in their absence? Both were key to the 5-1 drumming yesterday, and we must replace them with quality, question is who? I’ll go first. First off I would move Giggs into the centre and put park on the left. Up front I would play Solskjaer for the first half, then Rossi in the second. What do you guys think?

Man of the Match: Wayne Rooney
One to watch: Patrice Evra

Hi Simon, thanks for the post. I really dont think Brown is comfortable at right back, he is much more effective at centreback. I think smith and Solskjaer are ok up front, Smith especially as he is strong and will provide saha with lots of through balls. When he started for us last season up front he was class and scored 4 in 5 games. Whether he can be fit in time for wednesdays game is another matter. The other option is to play Richardson and park on the wings, with ronaldo playing a little deeper than saha. He played this position well for Portugal, so I'm sure he would enjoy playing it for United. We can't afford to drop any points this season with Chelsea having such a strong squad! Chelsea are lucky like that, "stand up if you hate Chelsea"

munv1nonly welcome to the blog. There are so many people out there who love to knock united. There are even more united fans that like to moan and complain. It is mine and the other posters job to build United up. I love united and always will and I believe in supporting my team as do many of the others in this community. Of course I will say when things are bad, but at the moment I have no reason to think they are. Saturdays performance demonstrated as much to me. We all went beserk when ole came on on saturday it was a special moment to be in the crowd! Looking forward to wednesday already!!!

United were superb yesterday. Getting an early goal helped as the team settle down. In recent times this hasn't happened so often and the players have looked a bit edgy. As for Wednesday's game, I can see Fletcher coming in for Scholes with Richardson coming in for Rooney. Richardson played that role a couple of times in pre-season and combined well with Fletcher. Giggs looked great out wide and I'd like to see him stay there.

Will hargreaves sign or not!!

We really hope he will, depends on whether or not Munich soften their stance. If he was really dropped because of the utd interest this weekend, it would suggest that something is going on.. either that or they are putting the lad in his place!

Welcome back clonefunk. I thought we may have lost you over the weekend.. usually you are the first to post on articles providing a "colourful" view on the red army.

I thought we played well yesterday but I have to be honest and say that Fulham didn't turn up until the second half. They were a yard off the manu player with the ball and hardly put a tackle in (when they did in the second half it was an outrageous one on Giggs!). Thought Ole looked off the pace but this is only to be expected. I'd only play him for 45/60 minutes against Charlton, if he starts.

I'm with you Agent I think I would go for Saha and Ronaldo up front with Richardson filling on for Ronaldo on one wing and Park on the other. I would have Giggsy in central midfield along with O'Shea. Keep Fletcher out of the equation if at all possible.

I thought Scholes was actually back to his best on Sunday and Evra could learn a few things from him about keeping the ball protected when in possession. There were a couple of occassions when Evra didn't get himself between the ball and the opposition player and actually lost it. I know he played well but he needs to concentrate fully as this sort of thing will be punished against the better teams.

A good start then, but we need to continue in this vein against Charlton and Watford before the first real test against Spurs.

What are the odds on a deal for Hargreaves this weekend. Most of the managers/officials from the big European clubs will be in Monaco on Friday for the Champions League draw and Super Cup match so hopefully something will be concluded between Bayern and ManU.

All the Georgie.

I see Hansen is making his excuses for Liverpool’s performance against Sheffield Utd and that ManU and Chelsea had easy home fixtures. He's such an arsehole. I wish the BBC would get someone better in as their main pundit he's so fucking clichéd. David Pleat is in my opinion the best columnist around at the moment. It's a petty Strachan decided to return to management as he brought a breathe of fresh air to the sports pages when he analysed matches.

Right, that's enough bollocks from me I better do some work.

The guy is a joke. I really cant stand the guy. I've said it before and I'll say it again, whenever we play well, it's because the other team played poorly in his opinion. He again demonstrated this point of view in This article. They really need to cut the w****r lose, as he is the most biased pundit there is. Perhaps we should start a petition ?

I think I'm right in saying Hansen was dropped by Fergie when the latter filled in as Scotland coach for the '86 World Cup. Don't think they ever got on after that. There are far worse pundits out there however(anyone watch the ITV coverage of the World Cup?).

at least you didn't have to suffer through ESPN's coverage over here in the US! absolutely dire. they spent half the time trying to explain the off-side rule - then again, i'm not sure anyone knows how that one works!

in fact, the only bright spot on their commentary team was eric wynalda who did a very good job of sounding like an american version of hansen - criticise everything, blame the coach, the players, the ref, the linesman, the groundsman, the sun, the wind and the rain, and then tell us how he would have done it.....at least it was amusing alongside the rest of them who didn't know what to make of the whole thing and obviously were out of their league (ie. out of the american football league).

anyway, fantastic opener. i'm not surprised. i've felt for a while that ferguson was building up a new team and i think with the two r's he's really got something to work around.

i'd love to see park and richardson out there. i think they're both really exciting players who make utd what we love: free flowing, fast, open, edge of the seat. add them to rooney, giggs, ronaldo and you've got a shit load of forward momentum.

'see ya later' from across the pond.
