Was Rooney's sending off really justified?

The latest saga of the Wayne Rooney era unfolded last night as he was sent of for a fourth time in his career and for the 3rd time in a year. Clapping in a referees face is stupid, stamping on a players groin is mindless and elbowing another player in the face is downright violent. But on closer inspection we can see that Rooney
a) Hardly touched the player and it certainly didn’t warrant him rolling around on the floor as though he had been shot
b) it seemed to me that Rooney had his eye on the ball and was using his arm for leverage in height, after all he is not the tallest of players is he?
I think this was definitely a case where Wayne’s reputation preceded him and he was dealt with overly harshly. Scholes on the other hand is a different matter. His challenge was rash and from behind and at 31 he should have known better considering he was already on a caution.

Let's just hope that they are not referred to the FA and they don't miss the start of the season. The 2 sending’s off soured a thrilling victory where Scholes, Rooney and Solskjaer rounded of a superb 3-1 win over Porto. As always we want to hear your comments on the sending’s off.
