Manchester United transfer News 15-08-06

Hargreaves Transfer News
With the united deal between Villareal and United for Senna dragging on, has Ferguson got his eye on other targets? The interview with Owen Hargreaves for England last night seemed to fire up the rumours that the Englishman may yet be applying his trade in the premiership this coming season.

At England's media conference yesterday, Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves again admitted he's keen to join Manchester United.

United boss Alex Ferguson is ready to pay £8million to Bayern Munich for England's World Cup midfield star, 25.

Hargreaves said: "The Premiership is one of the best leagues in the world and I'm closer now than ever".

"I can't say what will happen between now and the end of the transfer window. But more English teams saw what I had to offer during the World Cup."

In further transfer rumours on the Tevez front.

Corinthians manager Geninho has resigned following another defeat. Corinthians lie in last place in the league and lost again at the weekend after having a player sent off. I handed in my post, I’m no longer coach of Corinthians,” said Geninho, who was in charge for 11 matches at Brazil’s richest and most turbulent club.
“Unfortunately, my work didn’t produce the results I’d hoped for.”
Corinthians are the wealthiest club in Brazil, making their money from farming players out to Europe for exorbitant fees.

Manchester United has been strongly linked to the Argentinean wonder kid in the past and this most recent turbulence may result in a bid from the Red giants. Your comments are always welcomed

Hargreaves would be better value than senna even if he is twice the price. He seems a decent hardworking sort, without the attitude/ego probs some imports have(not being xenophobic but our recent ones have been more shit than not). Could bring the old style english backbone we had in days gone by

i wouldn't exactly refer to Hargreaves as "old style english", however he has great utility value, and if he is indeed valued at 8million would be a sensational buy. I still find it hard to believe that Bayern would let him and Ballack leave during the same pre season.

But then again, we aren't privvy to all the information, i'm not sure what Bayern's financial position, or how Hargreaves gets on with Klaus Topmoeller (i realize he isn't the coach, but just wanted to say that name...what a great name, deserves a champions league winners medal just for having the best name in football). Anyhow back on the topic of signings, i wouldnt be surprised if Fergie whipped out a signing or two, which no one has there finger on.

We are all looking towards Hargreaves, Senna, Diarra, Adriano, Tevez and that Spanish chap. Chances are he might be looking at someone else. Who knows? i for one certainly don't, i'm happy to start the season as it is, i'd be even more happy if we signed one more midfielder just to protect the squad through rotation.

I'm going to put myself on a limb here and say between Saha/Rooney and Ronaldo we will score 60 goals.

However, i have a sneaky suspicion (sp), that if we get in a striker, Fergie may sell Saha to Ligue 1. I hope not, i'd love to see him stay injury free and playing regularly. Okay enough from me,
good night and stay classy Burnley

Hargreaves before Senna yes but with the tranfsfer deadline approaching and it now looking unlikely we'll get a top forward we might as well go for Senna as well and use him as backup. The paperwork is probably already written and just waiting to be signed anyway. Let's face it we got Evra as cover for Heinze and he's harldy had a kick, Senna will at least get some opportunities during the season especially if we seriously want to challenge for the Premiership and champions league. We need two decent players in every position not just one and some Fletcher types as backup.

I would hate to see saha leave even if we do get another striker. I would liek to see him get a season without an injury, to really prove his worth. He was awesome at Fulham, thats why we paid £12 million for him and I am in no doubt that he can pick up from where Ruud left off! I really can't see it being a problem that Ruud has gone. Yes he grabbed goals, but we have so much firepower from younger players I struggle to see how we will miss him.

Just thought I'd write in. I have been reading your blog for a few weeks now and it's got good thoughtful content.

I have to say, I am getting fed up of reading and talking about constant speculation with little action. It has been the most frustrating summer I can remember for sometime, probably made worse by the press.

Anyway, I'm dubious on Hargreaves. I don't believe in buying players on a few good performances, which is what I believe is happening to a degree. We would not have entertained the transfer pre-WC. Football fans are fickle and we change our minds too easily. I know he has a good reputation in germany but the premiership is different and so he would be a gamble. IMO he would cost a lot more than 8mil. I think Bayern will push us to carrick levels if we want him, hence the gamble. Don't get me wrong, I rate him and for 8mil I would say yes, but would be concerned at paying 15m+. I would rather pay that for Diarra or your favourite, Mascherano. Carrick is different, more of a playmaker and I have high hopes for what he will bring.

Diarra would be great but I doubt he will come, which is sad that we appear less attractive than Real. It's his loss as he would be highly regarded at united and we would base a lot of our play around him, similar to Makelele. I would be happy to get the Senna deal done in any case. I've seen him a few times and did consider him more appropriate than Riquelme, as we have Scholes and Carrick do do JRR's job. Senna would certainly add to our squad, which any signing should do (in recent seasons some haven't as you know). If we get another striker great, if not, we are better equipped to survive than to continue with a make-shift central midfield. Priorites! Most teams would jump at the chance of having Rooney and Saha up front anyway, allied with good international class back up.

Finally, I have a feeling that Ronaldo could be very special this season which is one reason why I am keeping my optimism.

Come on the kids!

It seems that most of the posters are in agreement. Its a shame about carrick's injury, as i've been eager to see what he can produce with the likes of rooney, saha and ronaldo to distribute to. Oh well, have to wait a couple more weeks, but i'm pretty confident as i am sure he is, that he will contribute to the flow of the team from the offset.
To be honest, the actual transfer hasn't really set in with me, i mean lets not beat about the bush, this guy is a serious act, and will seriously improve us from last year, however if we are going to beat the milliondollar men at stanford bridge, he needs protection. And im not refering to the durex variety, but in the trusty two footed tackles of a DMC.

Fancy a Brew?

well basically we havent a clue til sunday!

maybe evra could be the new romario....he's certainly not a defender!

we're not gonna get Mascherano or Tevez, or prob Diarra, lets face it if players nowadays have to choose Madrid or Utd they seem to go for Madrid.

I agree that Hargreaves would be a good addition to the squad and would be far keener on him that Senna. It looks like the midfield will have far greater depth this season and with one more striker I think Man Utd will really push Chelsea. At the start of every season the press seems to get obsessed with the quality of the Liverpool and Arsenal squads before attacking Man Utd's weaknesses. I don't understand this. Man U were only 9 points off Chelsea last season.

I also think this will be a big year for Fletcher. I realise that many a supporter would think I need medical help to suggest such a thing but he has looked good in pre-season. In the past couple of years he has shown potential but seems to be affected the over the top criticism from certain quarters. With Scholes most likely suspended and Carrick injured, Fletcher has a chance to prove any doubters wrong. I still believe he has genuine quality. (For my personal safety I will remain anonymous).

Hargreaves has been playing in the CL for more than 5 seasons, and has proven he's top class. What I mean is, there's more to him than this year's WC.

I agree that this transfer period has been very disappointing. I'll admit that last year we had too many injuries, and it was unfortunate. But our early performances in the PL and our embarrasing exit from the CL show that we could not cope with all those injuries. Until now, the number of first teamers is about the same.

And guess what?

We have many injured players, and two of our key players suspended for three games. I hope this doesn't compromise our long-lost "good start to the season." If more quality players had come in, I'd be considerably less worried about it. Conclusion: we DO need another midfielder or two, and we DO need another striker. We need more depth to an already amazing squad. Our starting 11 needs competition for their place.

hi there. great blog. intelligent and thoughtful comments from all. for a brit in exile (in the US) it's almost like having MOTD!

hargreaves is a smart buy. he's young, he's eager, he's talented and SAF, assuming the deal goes through, will help bring out OH's innate intelligent reading of the game - a quality that we have been lacking down the middle for some time now.

of course, carrick brings that too, and i'm excited about the prospect of the two working together. the real advantage though, as you all have pointed out, will be the strength in depth that we gain from having OH, PS and MC, not to mention a certain alan smith when the poor lad is back (and i still think he's better in midfield).

but can someone please explain evra to me? not getting to see matches on a regular basis i've no idea what he brings to the team.

looking forward to the season. utd to win by 3. liverpool second and chelsea 3rd.....(in my dreams perhaps).

Marlowe Diego welcome to the blog and thanks for your kind comments. We are really picking up momentum now with some really quality and thoughtful posters, which is awesome. At least we don't need to listen to Hansen telling us how poor we are every week (been a few comments on that yesterday). I read a story yesterday that Evra could be on his way for a similar fee that we paid for him. If I'm honest I would like to see him stay for a season and perhaps play him as a winger. Ive got executive seats for the Arsenal game and can't wait for it, it's gonna be immense!!
Oh and Diego... it's all about dreams, we're all at it on this blog!!

Hi, this is a good site, I like what you're doing.

Can not agree with the thoughts on Hargreaves, however. The guy can't play football. OK he's got phenomenal fitness and tenacity, but he can't shoot, pass forwards or tackle (in the conventional way, he just hustles and harries). Up until the world cup his performances were always an embarrasment. At WC for England he ran around a lot, well done, more than Beckham did, but his fundamental flaw is that he cant pass forwards and will not take possession from the centre backs when anyone is near him. Against Portugal this left the centre backs to play long balls they were not capable of playing or Gerrard and Lampard coming deep - meaning there was no support for Rooney, especially considering Beckham played so deep.

Compare this with when Carrick played the same role against Equador. A fact many of you seem to have missed is that they actually play the same posistion - so why are we considering buying Hargreaves! He was happy taking the ball anywhere he sat and began all the moves, many with incisive passes. OK England were not great, but they were better than against Portugal and Lampard and Gerrard could actually get forward.

My point is that Hargreaves is a very limited player, brilliant against a shocking Greece side, but what about in big possesson games at the top of the Prem or CL? You can't carry someone who gives the ball away that much.

The fee at £13M is a joke as well, save the money for a striker or left winger, which is what we actually need.

Cheers Simon, Manchester
