Ronaldo answers the jeers and booing with 2 fabulous goals

Ronaldo always knew he was in for a rough time upon his return to English football. It is how he handles it that will determine whether or not he establishes himself as one of the true footballing and United greats.

Ronaldo had his first outing last night in a friendly against Oxford United and boy did he feel the wrath of English fan’s hatred against him. As he left the team bus angry fans threw chewing gum and spat at him. One fan even tried jumping the barrier to give the Portuguese player a real piece of his mind. If this was what it is like against Oxford just imagine the reception he will get when he visits Anfield this season.

Ronaldo has done himself no favours in endearing himself to either United fans or rival fans over the summer. The appeal to the referee, for Rooney’s sending off, the wink, coming out to the press saying he wants to leave for Real Madrid and his apparent theatrical diving on the field have catapulted him to public enemy number 1.

But the summer is over now and the guy is only 21 years old and it is time for Ronaldo to step up to the mark and prove his worth. In a world where you are constantly under the spotlight playing such a competitive game and with the British press who just love to pick on any successful player they can it is understandable that he has been treated this way and goes some way to excusing some of the things that he has been held accountable for.

Spitting on players and throwing chewing gum is wrong and shows just how distasteful English football fans can be and if this is what Ronaldo can expect for the rest of the season then I don’t blame him for wanting away to sunnier climates.

Booing I can accept and any strong character can shrug that off. And shrug it off he did last night. With 2 superbly taken goals. Ronaldo was ridiculed from start to finish but he seemed unphased. In fact it seemed to spur him on. If he carries on playing like this for the rest of the season, opposition fans will be silenced for good as he rips them apart.

Ferguson has been remarkably tactile throughout this whole Ronaldo saga. He has stood by the player even when he was saying he wanted to move away. I’m sure now the Scotsman has him back at the club under his watchful eye, he can protect the player and help him mature as a footballer. Fergie has an incredible knack for supporting players in the darkest hour. Anyone remember Beckham in 1998? Ronaldo is no different and he will win United hearts again by demonstrating what a great footballer he is.

when you pay for utd you play for utd so we should support him no matter what. unless he moves...Look, do you really want him to come to Old Trafford in 5 years time and rip the shit out of us?

That's it! I'm sure Fergie will drill him well. He has shown a lot of guts to come back to United. He could have handed in a written transfer request but he didn't. I think he will become a fans favorite with his performances this season

Yes I think Rooney is a testiment to the Utd ethos. I just hope we can bring in enough quality to support such a talent. I have been doing a bit of research recently about the finances at United since the takeover and I must admit it doesn't look great! If the Glazers ruin our club there will be trouble!!

fuck the glazers, if it wasnt them screwing as much out of the fans as they can it would be some other leeches. support the team to the hilt but dont buy any stupid crap they're selling.

it may affect transfers but then Djemba Djemba, Kleberson, Gary Birtles were all PRE glazer anyway!!

What a horrible article. The author is probably a Chelsea fan! We are much stronger than last season,no doubt! We came second last season with no midfield.. Now we have one. OK we haven't splashed the cash on transfers, but you don't necesarily have to to bring success. I'll say it again, class of 1992. We have some of the best players in the premiership in Ferdiand, Heinze, Ronaldo, Rooney and Carrick, so who does this guy think he is? It's oh so easy for journalists to comment on things they actually know nothing about. Fergie is a legend and I for one will be supporting my team all the way this season. If we don't have money I will blame the Glazers, not Fergie, he has doen a magnificent job over the years and I will forever support him!

Jeff the figures don't look great I'll be honest. Interest payments run at about £67 million a year. We were making profits of about £54 million before the Glazers took over (remember this was after transfers). Last season the interest payments were around £90 million and we got knocked out of the champions league early. It is going to be tough for a couple of seasons I think. However on the plus side we have more TV revenue and a better shirt sponsor, as well as a bigger ground. If we continue in the same fashion as we have done for the past decade we should be ok and we will see an improvement in the situation around 2009. But be prepaired to sit tight until then, unless we win the champs league or premiership!

I seriously feel that if Senna comes to Utd as a stop gap, it will seriously improve the situation regarding the prem. Its all about improving the results against the lesser sides, and that is dependent on squad size and obviously quality.
The united way under Ferg has been to bring in a couple of big players and integrate them with the youth. Right now, united has Richardson, Pique, Rossi, Jones etc we just need two DMCs. Gravenson and Senna would be ideal, plug the gap, let fergie rotate players. And when we start to win more and the finances moving towards the black, we can go in for the likes of Mascherano...or whoever is his equiv in years to come. We don't lack creativity, we just need to maintain position and have that ability to steal the ball and attack on the break.
Saha if he stays, will score plenty of goals and create plenty, I can see Ronaldo breaking the 20 mark, Scholes will chip in with 10, Saha 20, Rooney 15 to 20, goals will not be a problem.

There is certainly no need for Torres, however if United were to stump up the cash for Tevez, then it might not be such a bad idea as it could lead to the luring of Mascherano...thats if he hasnt already signed with someone else.

With Mascherano, Carrick, Rooney, Ronaldo, and Tevez....United would be challenging for pretty much everything...however there are many ways to skin a cat....and i pretty sure fergie has a couple of plans up his very long sleeves.

Ruud dog, welcome to the blog. Thanks for your comments, they seem to reiterate what many of us are feeling. Ok we don't have loads of cash at the moment, but Fergie knows what he's doing and it is up to us to get behind him as fans, not moan because we arent spending as many roubles as Chelski. Our club got to where it is through hard work and determination. We brought preliminary success through the faith in English talent and to a certain extent local! I love the way we give youngsters an opportunity and yes many will fail, but at least they had a shot at the big time. We don't need Torres just a couple of midfielders, although Tevez and Mascherano would be great!
