When are we signing a midfielder?

Well it looks like Bayern Munich are successfully fending off Manchester United’s advances. Hargreaves has been told to shut up and that in no uncertain terms he is going nowhere. That is all well and good, problem is… where does that leave us? If we can’t persuade Bayern Munich to let Hargreaves go, who are we going to sign? Senna has said that he no longer wants to move to us because we have been dithering about and Diarra has moved to Real Madrid. Time is running out and I certainly think we need another midfielder if we are to challenge for top honours this season.

The other option could be to wait until Christmas and try to prize Hargreaves away again. If he keeps insisting he wants a move away Bayern may back down over a transfer, realising that a move really would be in the best interest for both the player and the club. Any manger will tell you that you do not get the best out of an unhappy player and in recent weeks the relationship between Hargreaves and Hoeness has evidently soured “I would advise him to keep his mouth shut or else I will get really angry. And that won’t be good for him.”. How a player can be expected to continue in the face of such remarks is beyond me. Further evidence to suggest that all is not well between club and player is the fact that Hargreaves was dropped at the weekend. The club insist he had a bout of flu, although this seems incredibly well timed (forgive the cynic in me).

So if we don’t get Hargreaves in this transfer window will we cope? I think so. Scholes demonstrated his prowess at the weekend. He was the master in the centre of the park and I truly believe that he will partner very well with Carrick. O’Shea played well, although I don’t think he will provide us with enough cover at the highest level. We need another world class midfielder at Christmas so we can rotate the squad somewhat. The problem would come if either Scholes or Carrick get injured. If they both picked up knocks, strains or tares then we would be back where we were last season, and no one wants that.

In other news Tevez has fallen out big time with Corinthians. He was stripped of the captaincy and has announced that played his last game for the club. Could Fergie spend big up front now that it is looking unlikely that he will get Hargreaves by the 31st August? I can’t believe I’m saying this but I hope he doesn’t. I love Tevez and he would be a great signing for us, but our priority must be the midfield. We can score goals a plenty with Rooney, Ronaldo and Saha on the pitch, we just need a solid midfield behind them. Here’s an idea….we buy Hargreaves from Bayern, then they use the money to buy Tevez, sorted job done, can I have the Manchester United managers position please?

As always look forward to your comments.

P.S just thought I’d throw this one in there, what about my favourite player Mascherano? With the turmoil at Corinthians, surely he is worth a cheeky bid? £17 million (the price we are reportedly offering for Hargreaves) may just be enough. Surely we might as well enquire?

I dont think we'll go for Hargreaves in Christmas as he'll have played in CL and wont' be available for us in that competition. We don't know if bayern will let him even the next year. He's at the very best age to sign him and if we fail now i think we'd rather go for Masherano in Christmas (as the season in Brasil will be over)and for now try to get some cheap cover who'd be a good squad player i.e. Makoun (it's good to have a cover if Mascherano is injured). And i still have a cheaky feeling that eventually Mash will become even better than Hargreaves.

Spot on about Tevez. Far too similar to Rooney. Torres offers an entirely different skill set. And should he become available, perfect. But only after we've signed a defensive-minded midfielder. That's got to be our first priority. It's got to be. Still hoping Hargreaves works out. If not...De Rossi, yes, Why haven't we been linked with him? Great player. Right age. I've heard Roma could use the money. Hmm. Otherwise, what about Jean Makoun? Admittedly, haven't seen much of him but I've heard good things. Might he be a cheaper alternative for now? Why not Allou Diarra? He had a good World Cup. Matured since his Liverpool experience. Ahh. I hope something happens. Soon.

We tried to sign Mascherano and Corinthians weren't letting him go. Price was too high. And isn't Chelsea somehow involved in his future? Good player but not an option at this point.

I know this is blasphemy but I wish Man U had Arsenal's eye for talent. They always seem to bring in unknowns at relatively cheap prices and turn them into world beaters. Viera came on the cheap. Fabregas. Gilbrto, even though a World Cup winner, was relatively inexpensive. Diaby's going to be a player. We need to get somebody in here who can indentify talent early.

Let's wait until this weekend, I still don't understand why Bayern have let ManU talk to the player already and only now are they going on about reporting us to UEFA for illegal tap ups etc. I think there is more to this than we know. It's so unlike Fergie to make such overtures for a player publicly before something being in place with the other club. he hasn't made the same sort of comments about Senna or carrick before things were close to completion. I wonder if Bayern said MU could talk to Hargreaves whilst they were negotiating for Ruud, theres just something not quite right. I still think we may well get him after this weekend -lets hope because we need midfielders not forwards at the moment.

Radio... I think you could be right on this one. I said this earlier that something didn't seem to be right. Why didn't they say something earlier? The Ruud thing makes perfect sense. This totalitarian attitude cannot be good for morale. There have been some pretty harsh blunt statements made by the Bayern personel, does this mean that they are seriously worried about losing him? The other thing I wanted to know is how does it work if he Hargreaves ahnds in a written transfer request? Do they have to let him leave then. I read elsewhere that he would lose a lot of bonuses or take a hit financially, which suggests to me that they would have to let him leave as he would lose out. Can anyone shed any light on how it works?

Thanks Sambo. That would make sense. So do they lose their bonuses because they are not committed to the club then? I assume that would be written into his contract when he signed it. I know what you mean, the comments seem to be getting harsher and harsher. If we look at how United treated the Ronaldo situation, they said he was one of the best players at the club and then dispatched Quieroz to try and smooth things over. The whole situation was clamed down much quicker and with little fuss. I would say that the Ronaldo situation was also a lot more delicate as Ronaldo knows he is in for a very tough season. In my opinion the fact he has stayed with such little fuss is a credit to Fergies managerial credentials.

Something I don't understand though is if something is going on behind the scenes, why are Bayern coming out so strongly? Surely the more they persist the sillier they will look if a deal finally does go through? I think the theory presented by Radio makes the most sense. We were allowed to talk to him whilst the Ruud deal was going through, Fergie sad that he hoped he joined Bayern. Now that they haven't got their man, they are throwing a bit of a paddy refusing to negotiate with us. It would explain the OTT statements coming from them. What do others think?
